Practice on 6th November 2008

It has been a while since anyone of us got to work our knees so guess what techniques we had to practice on that night? Yes you guessed it, hanmi handachi waza.

We have to execute iriminage, kotegaeshi and shihonage techniques in hanmi handachi position from shomenuchi, yokomenuchi, katatedori and kosa dori attacks. It is basically the same as executing the waza in tachi position but we were reminded that only for hanmi handachi shomenuchi shihonage that we finish the technique in tachi position.

Somehow this session seemed to be less taxing than the last. lost Sensei showed us a few pointers on executing shihonage and being the uke for that technique. As kosa dori techniques were rarely tested on sensei thought that it would be prudent to let practice on the same. we were told not to rush in execution of techniques and reminded us of kuzushi of uke as well as making sure that flow is not lost during execution.

The jiyuwaza session was against katatedori attacks. Sensei noted that during jiyuwaza we tend to ignore awase and atemi and we need to pay attention to our tai sabaki. As usual the class ended with suwariwaza kokyuho.

After practice we treated ourselves to some home made cookies!

10th IAF Congress & Seminar - 6th October 2008 Founder's Day

On the second day of arrival in Tanabe the 10th IAF Congress & Seminar programme officially started. In the morning the delegates and participants were to visit the gravesite of O Sensei Morihei Ueshiba and prayers were held for him on Founder's day. As they were many people that day we were told to follow the blue coloured banner. Some time were given to us to look around but the crowd quickly gathered around the temple area where paryer's were being held for O sensei. Among the attendees were Doshu and his family, Dr Peter Goldsbury who is the president of the IAF, Mayor of Tanabe, Governor of Wakayama prefecture, shihans and delegates.

After the prayers the we were invited to pay our respects by offering incense and thereafter we proceeded to line up to pay our respects to at O Sensei's gravesite. Due to time constraint after respects were paid we were quickly ushered back to the bus to have lunch and prepare for the first 2 seminars in the afternoon to be conducted by Shoji Seki shihan from Hombu Dojo, 7th dan and Tony Smibert shihan from Australia, 6th dan.

Practice on 3rd November 2008

It was another day in the schedule of the intensive training programme that sensei has come up for us and tonight we concentrated on ushiro waza. We practised ushiro ryote dori dai nikyyo to gokyo. It proved to be a problem for all of us in certain parts of the execution anf sensei placed emphasis on the flow and posture during execution.

The last part of training was practising jiyuwaza against morotedori attacks. It was a attacked not often used during kiyuwaza practice and sensei wanted to see how the students would cope with it. After the session sensei would point out the mistakes that were made and demonstrate certain techniques used in jiyuwaza. Sensei reminded that kuzushi should be done on the uke and that musubi must be maintain during the execution of the technique. That would involve both the nage and uke. It is not easy to understand the concept of musubi and all can be said is that it takes practice.

Sensei showed some drills and requested the students to do the same and to achieve kuzushi of uke.

Sensei became the uke so that he knows whether the student is moving correctly
